How to Memorize the Quran: A Simple Hifz Plan

Memorising the Quran is one of the greatest honours a Muslim can receive. Millions of people, from young children to grandparents, carry the entire Book of Allah in their hearts, and the Quran itself promises that it has been made easy to remember. If you have dreamed of memorising the Quran but did not know where to begin, this guide gives you a simple, practical Hifz plan: how to start, how to memorise, and most importantly, how to keep what you have memorised.

The Honour of Memorising the Quran

The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ, said:

يُقَالُ لِصَاحِبِ الْقُرْآنِ: اقْرَأْ وَارْتَقِ وَرَتِّلْ كَمَا كُنْتَ تُرَتِّلُ فِي الدُّنْيَا، فَإِنَّ مَنْزِلَتَكَ عِنْدَ آخِرِ آيَةٍ تَقْرَؤُهَا (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 1464; Jami at Tirmidhi, Hadith 2914)
It will be said to the companion of the Quran: Recite and rise, and recite as you used to recite in the world, for your rank will be at the last verse you recite.

Every verse you memorise is a step higher in Paradise. And Allah promises: "وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ" (Surah Al Qamar 54:17), and We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember, so is there anyone who will remember?

Before You Start: Three Foundations

  1. Sincere intention. Memorise for Allah alone, not for praise or titles.
  2. Correct reading. You must be able to read the Quran correctly with basic Tajweed before memorising, so that you do not memorise mistakes. If you are not there yet, start with our Quran Reading course and Tajweed course.
  3. A teacher. A teacher listens to your memorisation, corrects errors and keeps you accountable.

A Simple Daily Hifz Plan

1. Choose a fixed time. The hours after Fajr are ideal, when the mind is fresh and the world is quiet.

2. Use the same Mushaf. Memorising from one copy helps your mind remember the position of verses on each page.

3. Start with Juz Amma. Begin with the 30th juz, which has short surahs you already know, then move to longer surahs.

4. Set a realistic daily portion. For beginners, three to five lines a day is a strong start. Increase slowly as your memory grows.

5. Follow a simple method:

  • Listen to the portion recited by a skilled reciter a few times.
  • Read it carefully from the Mushaf several times.
  • Memorise one verse at a time, repeating it until you can recite it without looking.
  • Join each new verse to the ones before it.
  • Recite the whole portion from memory to your teacher.

6. Recite your new portion in salah. Reciting what you memorised in your prayers fixes it firmly in your memory.

Revision: The Secret of Strong Hifz

Memorising is the easy part; keeping it is the real work. The Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:

تَعَاهَدُوا الْقُرْآنَ، فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَهُوَ أَشَدُّ تَفَلُّتًا مِنَ الْإِبِلِ فِي عُقُلِهَا (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 5033; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 791)
Keep revising the Quran, for by the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, it slips away faster than a camel from its rope.

A simple revision system:

  • New portion (sabaq): memorised today.
  • Recent portion (sabqi): revise the last few days’ memorisation daily.
  • Old portion (manzil): revise a part of everything you memorised before, every day.

Never skip revision to memorise more. Strong Hifz is built on revision.
