How to Perform Ghusl: Step by Step
Ghusl is the full ritual bath that purifies a Muslim from major impurity. It is one of those topics many people feel shy to ask about, yet knowing it correctly is essential, because without a valid ghusl when it is required, prayer is not accepted. In this guide, you will learn how to perform ghusl step by step as the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ did, when ghusl becomes obligatory, its obligatory acts, and the mistakes to avoid.
Ghusl in the Quran
Allah says: "وَإِن كُنتُمْ جُنُبًا فَاطَّهَّرُوا" (Surah Al Ma’idah 5:6), and if you are in a state of major impurity, then purify yourselves. This purification is ghusl.
When Is Ghusl Obligatory?
Ghusl becomes obligatory in these situations:
- After sexual intercourse, even if there is no ejaculation. The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ said that once intercourse takes place, ghusl becomes obligatory (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 291; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 348).
- After the release of sexual fluid with desire, whether awake or in a wet dream. When Umm Sulaym asked whether a woman must perform ghusl after a wet dream, the Prophet said: yes, if she sees fluid (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 282).
- At the end of menstruation (hayd).
- At the end of postnatal bleeding (nifas).
Sunnah (Recommended) Ghusls
Ghusl is also a Sunnah on certain occasions, though not obligatory:
- Before the Friday prayer, which the Prophet strongly encouraged.
- For the two Eids.
- Before entering ihram for Hajj or Umrah.
- On the day of Arafah.
The Fard (Obligatory) Acts of Ghusl
In the Hanafi school, ghusl has three obligatory acts:
- Rinsing the mouth thoroughly.
- Putting water into the nose, up to the soft part.
- Washing the entire body, so that not even a hair’s breadth is left dry.
In the Shafi’i and Maliki schools, the intention and washing the whole body are the essentials, while rinsing the mouth and nose are sunnah. Since the Hanafi school counts them as obligatory, every Muslim should include them to be safe.
How to Perform Ghusl Step by Step (Sunnah Method)
This method is based on the description given by Aishah and Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with them) of how the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ performed ghusl (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 248 and 249; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 316).
Step 1: Intention and Bismillah. Make the intention in your heart to purify yourself from major impurity, and say “Bismillah” before entering the bathroom.
Step 2: Wash your hands. Wash both hands three times.
Step 3: Wash the private parts. Wash away any impurity from the private parts and the body with your left hand.
Step 4: Perform wudu. Perform a complete wudu as you do for prayer. You may delay washing the feet until the end if you are standing where water collects.
Step 5: Rinse your mouth and nose thoroughly. Make sure water reaches every part of the mouth and the nose.
Step 6: Pour water over your head three times. Run your wet fingers through your hair so that the water reaches the roots and the scalp.
Step 7: Wash the whole body. Pour water over your right side, then your left side, making sure water reaches every part: behind the ears, the navel, the armpits, between the toes, and every fold of skin.
Step 8: Wash your feet (if you delayed them).
A shower works perfectly for ghusl, as long as water reaches the entire body.
Guidance for Women with Braided Hair
Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ whether she must undo her braids for ghusl. He said it was enough for her to pour three handfuls of water over her head (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 330). In the Hanafi school, a woman does not need to undo her braids, provided the water reaches the roots of her hair. If the hair is loose, all of it must be washed.
Common Mistakes in Ghusl
- Skipping the mouth and nose. In the Hanafi school, ghusl is not valid without them.
- Leaving dry spots, especially the navel, behind the ears, under rings and earrings, and between the toes.
- Nail polish or waterproof coatings, which stop water reaching the nails.
- Thinking a quick shower without rinsing the mouth and nose is enough.
Questions People Often Ask
Do I need wudu after ghusl? No. If you performed wudu as part of ghusl, or washed the whole body, you may pray without a new wudu. Aishah said the Prophet did not perform wudu after ghusl (Jami at Tirmidhi, Hadith 107).
Can I delay ghusl? Yes, but you must not delay it so long that you miss a prayer. If you sleep before ghusl, it is Sunnah to perform wudu first, as the Prophet told Umar (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 287).
What can I not do before ghusl? A person who needs ghusl should not pray, perform tawaf, touch the Mushaf, or, according to the majority of scholars, recite the Quran, until they perform ghusl.
A Final Word
Ghusl is a complete purification of the body, and a beautiful reminder that Islam cares for cleanliness inside and out. Learn it once properly, perform it calmly and completely, and you can stand before Allah in prayer with full confidence that you are pure.
