How to Perform Wudu Step by Step
Wudu, the ritual washing before prayer, is the key to Salah. No prayer is accepted without it, and every Muslim performs it several times a day. Yet many people learned wudu as children and never checked whether they are doing it fully according to the Sunnah. In this guide, you will learn how to perform wudu step by step, the obligatory acts commanded in the Quran, the sunnah acts taught by the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ, the dua after wudu, and the mistakes that can make wudu incomplete.
Wudu in the Quran
Allah commands wudu in Surah Al Ma’idah:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ (Surah Al Ma’idah 5:6)
O you who believe, when you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe over your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles.
The Fard (Obligatory) Acts of Wudu
In the Hanafi school, the obligatory acts of wudu are the four mentioned in this verse:
- Washing the whole face once, from the hairline to below the chin, and from ear to ear.
- Washing both arms up to and including the elbows, once.
- Wiping a quarter of the head with wet hands.
- Washing both feet up to and including the ankles, once.
If any of these is missed, the wudu is not valid. Other schools add further obligations: the Shafi’is and Hanbalis include intention and the correct order, and the Malikis and Hanbalis include washing the parts without a long break between them.
How to Perform Wudu Step by Step (Sunnah Method)
Step 1: Intention and Bismillah. Make the intention in your heart to perform wudu for the sake of Allah, and say “Bismillah”.
Step 2: Wash your hands. Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, starting with the right, and pass water between your fingers.
Step 3: Rinse your mouth. Take water into your mouth with your right hand and rinse it three times. Using a miswak or brushing your teeth here is a Sunnah.
Step 4: Clean your nose. Sniff water gently into your nose with your right hand and blow it out with your left, three times.
Step 5: Wash your face. Wash your whole face three times, from the hairline to below the chin and from ear to ear. If you have a thick beard, run your wet fingers through it.
Step 6: Wash your arms. Wash your right arm, from the fingertips up to and including the elbow, three times, then your left arm in the same way.
Step 7: Wipe your head. Wet your hands and wipe over your head, from the forehead to the back of the head and back again.
Step 8: Wipe your ears. With the same wet hands, wipe the inside of your ears with your index fingers and the back of your ears with your thumbs.
Step 9: Wash your feet. Wash your right foot up to and including the ankle three times, passing water between your toes with your little finger, then your left foot in the same way.
Step 10: Recite the dua after wudu (given below).
This is the method described by Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), who demonstrated the wudu of the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ to the people (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 159; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 226).
The Dua After Wudu
Meaning: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ said that whoever performs wudu well and then says this, the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever he wishes (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 234). In the narration of Jami at Tirmidhi (Hadith 55), these words are added:
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ
Meaning: O Allah, make me among those who repent often, and make me among those who purify themselves.
The Virtues of Wudu
- Sins are washed away. The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ said that whoever performs wudu like his wudu and then prays two rakats with full focus, his past sins are forgiven (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 159).
- Shining on the Day of Judgement. He said his Ummah will be called on the Day of Resurrection with shining faces, hands and feet from the traces of wudu (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 136).
- The key to prayer. Wudu prepares the body and the heart to stand before Allah.
Common Mistakes in Wudu
- Leaving the heels dry. The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ warned: "وَيْلٌ لِلْأَعْقَابِ مِنَ النَّارِ", woe to the heels from the Fire (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 60; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 241). Make sure water reaches every part of the feet.
- Not washing the elbows. The elbows must be included in the washing.
- Leaving dry spots around the nails, wrists or beard line.
- Wasting water. The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ performed wudu with about one mudd of water (roughly two cupped handfuls) (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 201). Do not leave the tap running.
- Nail polish. Waterproof nail polish stops water reaching the nails, so wudu is not valid until it is removed.
A Note on Wiping Over Socks
Wiping over leather socks (khuffs) instead of washing the feet is authentically proven, for a day and a night for a resident and three days for a traveller, provided they were put on after a complete wudu. Scholars differ on wiping over ordinary cloth socks, so follow the guidance of your school or a trusted scholar.
A Final Word
Wudu is more than washing; it is a daily act of worship that cleans the body, washes away sins and prepares the heart for prayer. Perform it calmly and completely, follow the Sunnah step by step, and end it with the dua that opens the eight gates of Paradise.
