Noorani Qaida: Complete Guide for Beginners

The Noorani Qaida is the first book almost every non Arab Muslim child opens on the journey to reading the Quran. For generations, in homes and mosques from Lahore to London, children and adults have learned the Arabic letters, sounds and rules from this simple but powerful book. If you or your child want to read the Quran correctly, the Noorani Qaida is the best place to begin. In this guide, you will learn what the Noorani Qaida is, what it teaches step by step, how long it takes, and how to learn it online with a qualified teacher.

What Is the Noorani Qaida?

The Noorani Qaida is a beginner’s book that teaches how to read the Arabic script of the Quran. It is named after its compiler, Maulana Noor Muhammad Ludhianvi, and it has been used for over a century across South Asia and, today, around the world. Its strength lies in its method: it builds reading skills step by step, from single letters to full Quranic words, so that by the end, a student can read the Quran with correct pronunciation and basic Tajweed. Later versions, such as the Madani Qaida, follow a similar approach.

What Does the Noorani Qaida Teach?

The lessons of the Noorani Qaida move in a clear order. Editions differ slightly, but the main stages are:

  1. Single letters (Mufradat): the 28 Arabic letters and their correct sounds, including those with no English equivalent.
  2. Joined letters (Murakkabat): how letters change shape when they connect.
  3. Huroof Muqatta’at: the disjointed letters at the beginning of some surahs, such as Alif Lam Mim.
  4. Short vowels (Harakat): fatha, kasra and damma.
  5. Tanween: the double vowel marks that add an “n” sound.
  6. Standing vowels: the standing fatha, kasra and damma that lengthen sounds.
  7. Letters of elongation (Madd) and softness (Leen).
  8. Sukun (Jazm): letters with no vowel.
  9. Shaddah (Tashdeed): doubled letters.
  10. Basic Tajweed rules: the rules of noon sakin and tanween, meem sakin, and stopping (waqf), which prepare the student to read the Quran correctly.

Why Is the Noorani Qaida So Important?

Reading the Quran correctly is not optional. Allah commands: "وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا" (Surah Al Muzzammil 73:4), and recite the Quran with measured, careful recitation. In Arabic, a small change in a letter’s sound can change the meaning of a word. The Noorani Qaida trains the tongue and ear from the very beginning, so that mistakes never become habits.

And the reward starts from the first lesson. The Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: "خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ", the best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 5027).

How Long Does It Take to Complete the Noorani Qaida?

With regular classes, most children complete the Noorani Qaida in about 3 to 6 months, and adults often in 1 to 3 months. The time depends on how often classes are held, practice at home, and the teacher’s guidance. Consistency matters far more than speed.
