Surah Kahf Benefits: Why Read It on Friday

Every Friday, millions of Muslims around the world open their Quran to Surah Kahf. Surah Al Kahf (The Cave) is the 18th chapter of the Quran, with 110 verses, found in the 15th and 16th juz. The benefits of Surah Kahf are proven in authentic Hadith: it is a light for the one who reads it on Friday, its first ten verses protect against the trial of the Dajjal, and tranquillity descends when it is recited. In this guide you will learn the authentic benefits of reading Surah Kahf on Friday, the best time to read it, the message of its four stories, and the verses of Surah Kahf that Muslims recite as duas.

Benefits of Surah Kahf from Authentic Hadith

1. A Light Between Two Fridays

Abu Sa’id al Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ, said:

مَنْ قَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْكَهْفِ فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ أَضَاءَ لَهُ مِنَ النُّورِ مَا بَيْنَ الْجُمُعَتَيْنِ (al Mustadrak of al Hakim; al Sunan al Kubra of al Bayhaqi)
Whoever reads Surah Al Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him from one Friday to the next.

Shaykh al Albani graded this narration as authentic. Some narrations report it as a statement of Abu Sa’id himself, and Hadith scholars explain that such a statement, which could not come from personal opinion, carries the weight of a prophetic saying. This light is guidance for the whole week, brightness in the heart and blessing in life.

2. Protection from the Dajjal

Abu al Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:

مَنْ حَفِظَ عَشْرَ آيَاتٍ مِنْ أَوَّلِ سُورَةِ الْكَهْفِ عُصِمَ مِنَ الدَّجَّالِ (Sahih Muslim, Book of the Prayer of Travellers, Hadith 809)
Whoever memorises ten verses from the beginning of Surah Al Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.

In the long Hadith of al Nawwas ibn Sam’an, also in Sahih Muslim, the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ said that whoever meets the Dajjal should recite the opening verses of Surah Al Kahf against him (Sahih Muslim, Book of Trials, Hadith 2937). This is why memorising the first ten verses of Surah Kahf is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and your children.

3. Tranquillity Descends with Its Recitation

Al Bara ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a Companion was reciting Surah Al Kahf while his horse was tied nearby. A cloud came down and covered him, drawing closer, and the horse began to panic. In the morning he told the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ, who said: "تِلْكَ السَّكِينَةُ تَنَزَّلَتْ بِالْقُرْآنِ", that was tranquillity, which descended because of the Quran (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 5011; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 795).

When to Read Surah Kahf on Friday

In the Islamic calendar, a new day begins at sunset. So scholars explain that the time for reading Surah Kahf on Friday begins at Maghrib on Thursday evening and lasts until sunset on Friday. You can read it at any time in this window. It is best to read it after Fajr on Friday or before the Jumu’ah prayer, so that a busy day does not make you miss it. If you cannot read the whole surah at once, read it in parts throughout the day.

The Four Stories of Surah Kahf and Their Message

Surah Kahf tells four stories. Many scholars have linked them to four great trials that every human being faces:

  • The People of the Cave: the trial of faith. A group of young men left everything to protect their faith, and Allah took them under His protection.
  • The Owner of the Two Gardens: the trial of wealth. Wealth made a man arrogant and forgetful of his Lord, until everything he had was destroyed.
  • Prophet Musa and Khidr (peace be upon them): the trial of knowledge. However great a person’s knowledge, Allah’s wisdom is far greater.
  • Dhul Qarnayn: the trial of power. A mighty ruler used his power for justice and service, and credited every success to Allah’s mercy.

The trial of the Dajjal will combine all four: he will attack faith, tempt with wealth, deceive with knowledge and frighten with power. That is why this surah is the Quran’s shield against these trials.

Verses of Surah Kahf Recited as Duas

Some verses of Surah Kahf are recited by Muslims as duas and regular recitations (wazifa). Since they are verses of the Quran, reciting them is worship and brings reward. However, no authentic Hadith fixes a special number or time for them, so recite them as heartfelt duas with sincerity and certainty.

1. Dua for Mercy and Right Guidance (Verse 10)

(Surah Al Kahf 18:10)

Transliteration: Rabbana atina min ladunka rahmatan wa hayyi’ lana min amrina rashada.

Meaning: Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and guide us rightly in our affair.

This is the dua of the young men of the cave as they took refuge. It is a perfect dua for any hard decision, exam, new beginning or confusing situation, because it asks for both mercy and right guidance.

2. Protecting Your Blessings (Verse 39)

(Surah Al Kahf 18:39)

Transliteration: Ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah.

Meaning: When you entered your garden, why did you not say: “What Allah wills. There is no power except with Allah”?

When you look at your home, wealth, children or any blessing and feel happy, saying “Ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah” is the teaching of this verse. It returns the blessing to its true Giver and protects you from arrogance. The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ called “la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” a treasure from the treasures of Paradise (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 4205; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2704).

3. When You Forget, and a Dua for Guidance (Verses 23 and 24)

(Surah Al Kahf 18:23
and 24)

Meaning: And never say of anything, “I will surely do that tomorrow”, except (adding) “if Allah wills”. And remember your Lord when you forget, and say: “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct.”

These verses teach every Muslim the manners of saying “In sha Allah”. When you forget something, remember Allah and
